About the data

Flights reconstructed from ADS-B — the position signal modern aircraft broadcast to air traffic. Coverage is strongest across North America and Europe, thinner over oceans, polar regions, and parts of Asia and Africa.

Long-haul flights whose paths cross sparsely-covered areas may appear with an unknown origin or destination — the receiver network loses sight of them mid-ocean. We mark those unknown rather than guess. Every flight is still counted in the totals; the route-by-route breakdown filters to flights with identified endpoints.

This page captures ADS-B traffic data for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (EHAM/AMS) on April 21, 2026, the 59th anniversary of the airport's opening as a major international hub. The dataset covers a full 24-hour period in CEST and logged 1,234 total flights: 598 arrivals and 636 departures, operated by 443 unique aircraft. An additional 344 ground operations were recorded. Traffic ran continuously from 00:00 through 23:59, averaging 51.4 flights per hour across the day. The busiest single hour was 10:00 local time, which saw 109 movements (49 arrivals, 60 departures). A secondary peak appeared at 15:00 with 105 total movements. The quietest period fell in the early hours between 02:00 and 04:00, where totals dropped to single digits. Top routes by combined movements were led by London Heathrow (LHR) with 28 flights, followed by Copenhagen (CPH) and Barcelona (BCN) each at 25, and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) at 23. London City (LCY), Madrid (MAD), Zurich (ZRH), and Munich (MUC) each recorded 22 movements. The dominant approach and departure directions were SE and ESE, with SSW and SSE also appearing consistently in both flow directions. Dutch-registered aircraft (NL) made up the largest share of the fleet at 204 of 443 unique aircraft, followed by unclassified (XX) at 39, GB at 26, and US at 25. The altitude dataset spans 1,135,551 ADS-B position points. The most frequently observed altitude bands were 0 to 1,000 feet (138,394 points) and 37,000 to 38,000 feet (48,363 points), reflecting high concentrations of traffic near ground level and at cruise. The average recorded altitude was 18,385 feet, with a maximum of 45,350 feet reached by a Portuguese-registered aircraft (CS-PHF) on a departure to Lisbon. The longest flight by distance was an arrival logged at 12,284 nautical miles, connected to Primorsko Airfield (LBPR). Average leg distance was 651.9 nautical miles, with an average leg duration of 110.3 minutes.
