Charles de Gaulle International Airport

Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) is one of Europe's most consequential aviation gateways, linking Paris to destinations across six continents. This metal print captures that reach — drawn from real ADS-B flight tracking data. Every flight path is colorized by altitude across your chosen palette.

This print visualizes the 1 flight recorded on March 8, 2024 — the 50th anniversary of CDG's opening day. Printed direct-to-metal on an aluminum panel, it is a piece of aviation wall art that locks in the exact moment this airport marked half a century in the sky.

ADS-B Points

March 8, 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Charles de Gaulle International Airport's opening day, and the ADS-B data captured for this date reflects a single tracked flight. One arrival was recorded, with no departures or ground operations making it into the final dataset. 914 trajectories were filtered out due to incomplete data, leaving one flight anchored to the airport. That single aircraft, French-registered F-GRXF (hex 3946E5), arrived from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) during the 07:00 hour CET, with first detection at 06:06 and final position logged at 08:04. The flight covered 808.3 nautical miles over approximately 117.5 minutes, reaching a peak altitude of 38,000 feet. Average groundspeed across the trajectory came in at 378.0 knots, with a maximum of 487.6 knots. The altitude profile shows the bulk of recorded ADS-B points concentrated at cruise levels, with 151 points between 37,000 and 38,000 feet and 97 points between 33,000 and 34,000 feet. Below 10,000 feet, point density drops sharply, consistent with a descent profile captured over a relatively short segment. The approach direction was logged as SSW. All tracked aircraft originated from France, reflecting the single-aircraft sample. The busiest hour was 07:00, which held the only recorded movement of the day. No departure directions were logged.

About the Airport

Charles de Gaulle International Airport opened on March 8, 1974, replacing Le Bourget as Paris's primary international gateway. Located in Roissy-en-France, about 25 kilometers northeast of central Paris, it was designed by architect Paul Andreu and developed by Aéroports de Paris. The airport's first terminal, Terminal 1, was a radical circular design with satellite modules connected by underground tunnels — an ambitious architectural statement that divided opinion from the start.

CDG grew rapidly through the late 20th century. Terminal 2 opened in 1981 and has since expanded into a sprawling complex of interconnected halls. A section of Terminal 2E collapsed in 2004, prompting significant safety reviews and structural redesign. The airport is the primary hub for Air France and a major base for transatlantic and intercontinental routes, serving over 75 million passengers annually in pre-pandemic years.

Geographically, CDG sits at the heart of northwest European airspace, making it one of the most strategically positioned hubs on the continent. It operates 4 runways configured in 2 parallel pairs, allowing independent simultaneous operations. The airport connects Paris to more than 350 destinations worldwide. Orly Airport handles much of the domestic and leisure traffic to the south of the city, leaving CDG to function primarily as the long-haul international hub. The RER B rail line links the airport directly to central Paris and Gare du Nord, placing it within reach of one of the world's most visited cities.
