About the Airport
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport opened on January 13, 1974, replacing the older Dallas Love Field and Greater Southwest International Airport as the primary commercial gateway for the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Its opening was years in the making — decades of regional politics and competing city interests preceded the groundbreaking. When it finally launched, it was among the largest airports in the world by land area.
Geographically, DFW sits between the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, straddling Tarrant and Dallas counties. That central position was intentional. It serves as the primary hub for American Airlines, which operates more flights through the airport than any other carrier. The result is a spoke-and-hub network of extraordinary density, connecting smaller regional cities across the U.S. to intercontinental routes with minimal layover friction. Terminal D, which opened its international expansion in January 2004, extended that global reach significantly, adding international gates purpose-built for wide-body operations.
The airport's layout is distinctive. 7 runways are arranged to allow simultaneous independent operations, and the terminal layout is a curved, semi-circular design connected by the Skylink automated people mover — one of the fastest airport trams in the world. The surrounding region is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, and DFW's traffic reflects that growth. It consistently ranks among the top 10 busiest airports globally by passenger volume. For the Metroplex, it is not simply infrastructure. It is the connective tissue of a region that has positioned itself as a national logistics and business hub.
