About the data

Flights reconstructed from ADS-B — the position signal modern aircraft broadcast to air traffic. Coverage is strongest across North America and Europe, thinner over oceans, polar regions, and parts of Asia and Africa.

Long-haul flights whose paths cross sparsely-covered areas may appear with an unknown origin or destination — the receiver network loses sight of them mid-ocean. We mark those unknown rather than guess. Every flight is still counted in the totals; the route-by-route breakdown filters to flights with identified endpoints.

ADS-B data captured on March 14, 2025 recorded 1,183 flights at Frankfurt Airport, split almost evenly between 590 arrivals and 593 departures. Traffic ran from 02:24 to 23:59 local time, averaging 49.3 flights per hour across the active day. The busiest single hour was 11:00, which logged 108 movements (49 arrivals, 59 departures). Early morning hours from 04:00 through 06:00 were heavily arrival-dominant, while the late evening window from 21:00 to 22:00 flipped the pattern sharply toward departures, with 99 outbound movements against just 8 arrivals in those two hours combined. A total of 419 unique aircraft were observed, generating 663,349 ADS-B position points. The top route by frequency was Berlin Brandenburg (BER), with 34 total movements (17 each way). London Heathrow (LHR) followed at 32, then Hamburg (HAM) at 30, Amsterdam (AMS) at 27, and Munich (MUC) at 25. ESE was the most common approach direction (96 arrivals) and also led departure directions (101 departures), with WNW second in both categories. German-registered aircraft made up the largest portion of the fleet at 222 of 419 unique aircraft, followed by unresolved registrations (25), US-registered (17), Croatian (14), and Turkish (14). Altitude data spanned from ground level to a peak of 42,675 feet, recorded by Canadian-registered C-FLMW on a departure. The average altitude across all tracked points was 19,784 feet. The highest concentration of cruise-altitude position points fell in the 35,000 to 36,000 foot band (33,127 points), with secondary peaks at 34,000 to 35,000 and 37,000 to 38,000 feet. Average groundspeed across all flights was 318 knots, with a maximum of 660.3 knots. The shortest flight logged was a 47.2-minute departure to Stuttgart covering 101.3 nautical miles. Average leg distance was 622.9 nautical miles at an average duration of 102.2 minutes.
