Los Angeles International Airport
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is one of the world's busiest airports, connecting the Pacific Rim, Latin America, and domestic networks across Southern California. This metal print captures that reach, rendered from real ADS-B flight tracking data. Every path is colorized by altitude, and the palette is yours to choose.
The print visualizes all 6,112 flights recorded June 1-4, 2026, the 65th anniversary of LAX's iconic Theme Building opening. Printed direct-to-metal on an aluminum panel, it is a piece of aviation wall art that fixes one of the world's great airports at a specific moment in time.

LAX handled 6,112 flights across four days from June 1 to June 4, 2026, averaging 1,528 movements per day and 63.7 per hour. Arrivals and departures split nearly evenly at 3,073 and 3,039 respectively, with 319 additional ground operations recorded. The busiest day was June 4 with 1,593 total movements. Hour 10 PDT was the peak window, logging 395 flights across all four days combined, with departures outnumbering arrivals 224 to 171. The overnight trough ran from 3 to 5 a.m., bottoming out at 39 total movements in the 4 a.m. hour, almost entirely arrivals. A sharp arrival surge characterizes the early morning, with 111 arrivals logged in the 5 a.m. hour against just 8 departures. San Francisco was the top connecting airport with 286 total movements, followed by Las Vegas (194) and JFK (193). Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas Fort Worth, Sacramento, and Portland rounded out the top ten routes. Approach and departure tracks concentrated heavily to the ENE and E, accounting for the two largest directional buckets in both categories. The 1,957 unique aircraft included registrations from 33 countries, with US-registered aircraft making up 1,512 of that total. Canada, Mexico, China, and Japan followed at 69, 53, 47, and 30 aircraft respectively. Altitude data spans from ground level to 51,000 feet, with the average ADS-B position recorded at 20,698 feet across more than 5.19 million data points. The 36,000 to 37,000 foot band was the single most populated altitude range. The longest tracked departure covered 2,876 nautical miles over 348 minutes, flown by French-registered F-GSQC. The highest-altitude flight reached 51,000 feet on a departure to Naples Municipal Airport. Average leg distance was 967.9 nautical miles, with an average duration of 154.1 minutes.

About the Airport
Los Angeles International Airport opened in 1930 as Mines Field, a modest municipal airstrip on the western edge of the city. The airport was renamed Los Angeles Airport in 1941 and took on its current name in 1949. Jet service arrived in 1959, and the airport expanded rapidly through the 1960s to meet surging demand on transcontinental and transpacific routes.
Geographically, LAX occupies a narrow coastal site in Westchester, hemmed in by residential neighborhoods, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and major freeways on all sides. That constrained footprint shapes nearly everything about how the airport operates. Its 4 parallel runways are arranged in 2 sets — an inner pair and an outer pair — separated by a central terminal complex. The distinctive dual-runway layout means arrivals and departures flow east and west almost exclusively, producing the characteristic wing-shaped flight pattern visible in ADS-B visualizations.
The airport serves as a primary hub for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines and a major base for American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines. Dozens of international carriers connect LAX to destinations across Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, making it one of the most globally connected airports in North America. The iconic Theme Building — a futurist parabolic arch structure completed in 1961 — remains the airport's most recognizable landmark. LAX consistently ranks among the top 5 busiest airports in the United States by passenger volume and plays an outsized role in the economics and identity of the greater Los Angeles region.
