Peak Hour Flights
This page captures seven days of ADS-B traffic at Salina Municipal Airport (KSLN) from December 29, 2024 through January 4, 2025, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the airport's conversion from military to civilian operations. Over that period, 89 total flight operations were recorded across 40 unique aircraft, all registered in the United States. The traffic split into 33 arrivals, 36 departures, and 20 touch-and-gos. Activity peaked at 16:00 CST with 12 operations in a single hour, and the average across all hours was 0.5 flights per hour. The first recorded flight departed at 06:28 CST and the last arrived at 09:05 CST. Denver International (KDEN) led all routes with 9 total operations (3 arrivals, 6 departures), followed by Chicago O'Hare (KORD) at 7 and Russell Municipal (KRSL) at 6. Shorter regional connections to McPherson (KMPR), Wichita (KICT), and Kansas City Downtown (KMKC) also appeared in the top ten. WNW was the most common approach and departure direction. The shortest recorded flight covered 22.7 nautical miles to McPherson in under 17 minutes, topping out at 2,550 feet. The longest was an arrival from Worcester Regional (KORH) spanning 1,205.3 nautical miles over 200 minutes. Altitude data across 35,149 ADS-B points shows a concentration of observations in the 2,000 to 4,000-foot range, consistent with traffic climbing away from or descending toward the field at 1,288 feet elevation. The average recorded altitude was 10,821 feet, while the maximum reached 43,300 feet on a departure to McClellan Airfield (KMCC) flown by tail number N30FP. Average groundspeed across all flights was 191 knots, with a recorded peak of 554 knots. Total distance flown across all legs came to 22,454.7 nautical miles.

About the Airport
Salina Municipal Airport traces its origins to Smoky Hill Army Air Field, a World War II bomber training base established in the early 1940s on the flat terrain west of Salina, Kansas. The federal government transferred the property to the city, and civilian operations formally took over in 1965. That transition marked the beginning of KSLN as a commercial and general aviation facility rather than a military installation.
The airport sits at an elevation of 1,288 feet MSL on the high plains of central Kansas, positioned near the geographic center of the contiguous United States. That location gives it practical relevance as a refueling and staging point for cross-country general aviation flights. The runway layout accommodates a broad mix of traffic, from single-engine training aircraft to turboprops and regional jets. Salina has long supported industrial and cargo activity tied to the surrounding agricultural and manufacturing economy of north-central Kansas.
SLN is classified as a reliever and general aviation airport within the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. It does not operate scheduled commercial passenger service, but it handles a consistent volume of charter, cargo, corporate, and military training flights. Salina's position at the junction of Interstate 70 and Interstate 135 reinforces the city's role as a regional hub, and the airport reflects that connectivity. The surrounding area includes active agricultural operations, light manufacturing, and proximity to Fort Riley, which contributes military flight activity in the region. For pilots and aviation professionals across the central plains, KSLN functions as a practical and accessible field with infrastructure that exceeds what most cities its size can offer.
