Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) is one of China's most strategically positioned aviation gateways, linking the Pearl River Delta's technology and manufacturing heartland to destinations across Asia and beyond. This metal print captures that connectivity — rendered from real ADS-B flight tracking data. Each flight path is colorized by altitude, shifting across your chosen palette from climb to cruise to descent.

Visualized on the 17th anniversary of SZX receiving full international airport status, this print renders all 7 flights recorded from May 1–7, 2025. Printed direct-to-metal on an aluminum panel, it is a piece of aviation wall art that locks a precise moment in the life of one of southern China's defining hubs.

Peak Hour Flights

This dataset covers seven days of ADS-B traffic at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX/ZGSZ), spanning May 1 through May 7, 2025. Over that window, seven flights were recorded across seven unique aircraft, all registered in China. Every recorded movement was a touch-and-go, with zero arrivals or departures logged. Activity was sparse and clustered in the morning and afternoon hours, with the first recorded flight at 08:03 CST and the last at 11:12 CST. The peak hour was 11:00, which saw two flights, matched again at 16:00. Hours 08:00 and 20:00 and 21:00 each contributed one flight. The remaining 19 hours of the day recorded no activity. Altitude data was captured across 488 ADS-B points. The average observed altitude was 7,317 feet, with a maximum of 11,200 feet. The most populated altitude band was 6,000 to 7,000 feet, accounting for 131 data points. The 9,000 to 10,000 foot range followed with 92 points, and 8,000 to 9,000 feet contributed 89. Only 11 points were recorded above 10,000 feet. Average groundspeed across all flights was 259 knots, with a maximum of 337.2 knots. Total distance tracked came to 133 nautical miles, averaging 19 nautical miles per leg at roughly 4.2 minutes per leg. No approach or departure directional data was captured, and no route pairings were recorded.

About the Airport

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport opened in 1991, serving the then-nascent special economic zone that China had established along its southern coast. It replaced a smaller facility and was built to meet the demand generated by Shenzhen's rapid industrial and economic expansion through the 1980s. The airport received full international status in 2008, a turning point that formalized its role in global aviation.

Geographically, the airport sits on reclaimed land along the eastern shore of the Pearl River estuary in Bao'an District, roughly 32 kilometers from Shenzhen's city center. That coastal position shapes its operations — approach paths arc over water, and the airport's orientation reflects the estuary's constraints. It serves as a primary gateway for the greater Pearl River Delta, a region that includes Shenzhen, Dongguan, and parts of Guangdong Province, and competes directly with nearby Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport for regional traffic.

The airport operates 2 terminals, with Terminal 3 — designed by Studio Fuksas and opened in 2013 — drawing particular attention for its distinctive undulating roof structure. Carriers including Shenzhen Airlines, China Southern, and numerous low-cost operators base significant operations here. The airport ranks among China's top airports by passenger volume, handling tens of millions of travelers annually. Its proximity to Hong Kong, just across the border, has long made it an alternative entry point for travelers moving between the two cities, a role that fluctuates with cross-border policy and regional demand. Shenzhen's identity as a global technology hub gives the airport an unusually high concentration of business traffic alongside leisure routes.
