Los Angeles International Airport
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is one of the busiest air gateways in the world, linking the Pacific Rim, Latin America, and every major domestic corridor to Southern California. This metal print captures that reach — drawn from real ADS-B flight tracking data. Every path is colorized by altitude across your chosen palette.
This print visualizes all 4,211 flights recorded September 1–3, 2025 — 40 years after LAX served as the primary airport for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Printed direct-to-metal on an aluminum panel, it is a piece of aviation wall art that holds one of the great convergence points in global flight at a moment worth remembering.

Peak Hour Flights
This page captures three days of ADS-B traffic at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX/LAX), spanning September 1 through September 3, 2025, on the 40th anniversary of LAX serving as the primary airport for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Over that window, 4,211 flights were recorded: 2,072 arrivals, 2,086 departures, and 53 touch-and-goes. A total of 1,536 unique aircraft appeared in the data, collectively covering 3,760,576 nautical miles. The busiest single hour was 14:00 PDT, which logged 326 flights, with departures outpacing arrivals 202 to 121 during that hour. The overnight hours were the quietest, dropping to 22 total movements at 04:00, and arrivals dominated the early morning window from 04:00 through 07:00 before departures caught up through midday. San Francisco (SFO) was the top route by total movements at 172 flights, followed by Las Vegas (LAS) at 155 and Seattle (SEA) at 112. Denver, JFK, and Chicago O'Hare each logged between 90 and 102 combined movements. Approach directions were concentrated to the ENE (515) and E (367), with NW (299) and NE (189) also accounting for substantial traffic. Departure headings showed a similar distribution, led by ENE (502) and E (371). Aircraft registered in the United States made up 1,154 of the 1,536 unique aircraft, with Canada (57), China (38), the United Kingdom (25), and Japan (22) also represented. Altitude data spanned from ground level to a peak of 51,050 feet, with the highest density of ADS-B position points clustered between 36,000 and 38,000 feet. The average recorded altitude across all 3,224,182 ADS-B data points was 20,514 feet, and average groundspeed was 337 knots. The shortest tracked flight was an 8.5-nautical-mile, 8-minute arrival from Compton Woodley Airport (CPM). The longest was a 4,662-nautical-mile, 824-minute arrival logged from Travis Air Force Base (SUU). The highest-altitude flight, reaching 51,050 feet, was a departure to Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) operated by Argentine-registered aircraft LV-KLH.

About the Airport
Los Angeles International Airport, known worldwide by its IATA code LAX, opened in 1930 as Mines Field, a modest municipal airstrip on the flatlands west of downtown Los Angeles. The city acquired the land in 1937, and scheduled commercial service expanded steadily through the postwar decades. By the time the jet age arrived, LAX had grown into one of the defining gateways of American aviation.
Geographically, the airport sits along the Pacific Coast in the Westchester neighborhood, roughly 16 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. That coastal position makes it the natural entry point for transpacific routes connecting North America to Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, as well as a primary hub for flights to and from Latin America. It consistently ranks among the world's top 5 airports by international passenger volume. The airport's distinctive parallel runway configuration — 2 sets of parallel runways oriented east-west — allows simultaneous arrivals and departures, a necessity for an operation of its scale. The iconic Theme Building, completed in 1961, remains one of the most recognized pieces of Googie architecture in the United States.
LAX is a hub or major operating base for American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, among dozens of international carriers. The Tom Bradley International Terminal, named for the longtime Los Angeles mayor, handles the bulk of overseas traffic. The airport serves the broader Southern California region, drawing passengers from Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Inland Empire. Few airports carry the same cultural weight — LAX is as much a symbol of Los Angeles as the city itself.
