Capital City Airport (FFT) in Frankfort, Kentucky has its roots in the years immediately following World War II. Efforts to establish an airport for the state capital began with the creation of Kentucky's first Aeronautics Commission in July 1940, but it was not until state and federal funding became available after the war that work could begin. Construction started in September 1952, the runway was paved and opened to light aircraft in November 1953, and the airport was formally dedicated on June 25, 1955, in a ceremony co-sponsored by the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce and the state Department of Aeronautics.

The airport sits one mile southwest of downtown Frankfort, placing it unusually close to a state capital's central business district. It is owned by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, a distinction that shapes both its mission and its mix of users. The traffic reflects that ownership directly: operations include state government flights, corporate and recreational general aviation, air taxi activity, and Army National Guard helicopter operations. The Kentucky Army National Guard's Boone National Guard Center adjoins the airport on its north side, and National Guard helicopters share the single runway with civilian traffic.

The airport has one asphalt runway, designated 7/25, measuring 5,506 by 100 feet. There is no control tower; pilots operate on a common traffic advisory frequency. The airport records roughly 39,000 aircraft operations per year. Geographically, FFT sits between Louisville and Lexington, two cities with major commercial airports, which means it serves a distinctly different role: a general aviation reliever and state government hub rather than a commercial gateway. Its location near Buffalo Trace Distillery and other historic producers in central Kentucky has made it a familiar stop for private pilots exploring the region.
