About the Airport
John F. Kennedy International Airport opened in 1948 as New York International Airport, commonly known as Idlewild. It was renamed in December 1963, just weeks after President Kennedy's assassination, and has carried his name ever since. From the start, it was built to serve a city that demanded a world-class international gateway.
Situated on Jamaica Bay in the borough of Queens, JFK occupies roughly 5 square miles of landfill and reclaimed marshland along the southwestern shore of Long Island. Its location places it about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan — close enough to serve the city, but hemmed in by dense urban geography that has long constrained expansion. The airport operates 6 runways and handles traffic from more than 90 airlines flying to destinations across 6 continents.
JFK is the largest airport in the New York metropolitan area and serves as a primary transatlantic hub for American carriers. It is the main U.S. gateway for many long-haul international routes, particularly to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. The airport's terminal layout is distinctive — rather than a single unified building, it developed as a ring of individually constructed terminals, each originally built and operated by a separate airline. That model has evolved through decades of renovation, but the decentralized structure remains a defining characteristic. JetBlue, Delta, and American Airlines operate major presences at the airport. The AirTrain people-mover, which opened in 2003, connects all terminals to the New York City subway and Long Island Rail Road, giving the airport a fixed-rail link to the broader transit network.
