Peak Hour Flights
ADS-B radar data captured 497 flights at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL/WMKK) on March 8, 2025, across 286 unique aircraft. Departures accounted for 415 of those movements, with only 82 arrivals logged. Traffic ran continuously from midnight through 23:59 local time, averaging 20.7 flights per hour. The peak hour was 09:00, with 36 movements recorded, 34 of them departures. A secondary concentration appeared in the evening, with 34 total movements at 18:00 and 33 at 19:00, the latter seeing 14 arrivals, the highest arrival count of any single hour. The busiest route by total movements was to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport (SZB), with 76 flights, followed by Kuantan Airport (KUA) at 52 and Sungai Tiang Airport (SXT) at 45. Singapore Changi (SIN) was the top international destination, logging 30 movements. ENE was the dominant departure direction at 103 counts, while WNW led approach directions with 15. Aircraft registered to Saudi Arabia made up the largest share of the fleet at 184, followed by China at 30 and Taiwan at 16. Altitude data was drawn from 88,212 ADS-B position points. The most frequently sampled altitude band was 1,000 to 2,000 feet at 6,556 counts. Two cruise bands stood out in the distribution: 37,000 to 38,000 feet at 2,779 counts and 39,000 to 40,000 feet at 2,203 counts. The highest recorded altitude was 45,575 feet, on an arrival from Hang Nadim International Airport (BTH). The longest flight covered 1,458.7 nautical miles over 199.4 minutes, departing toward Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX).

About the Airport
Kuala Lumpur International Airport opened on June 27, 1998, replacing the older Subang Airport as Malaysia's principal international gateway. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa, the airport was built to reflect a vision of a forest-in-an-airport, integrating tropical greenery into its terminal architecture. It sits in Sepang, Selangor, roughly 50 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur's city center.
KUL is the primary hub for Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia, two carriers with sharply contrasting business models that together shape much of the airport's character. Malaysia Airlines operates long-haul routes to Europe, Australia, and the Middle East, while AirAsia transformed the airport into one of the busiest low-cost hubs in the world. The airport's dedicated low-cost terminal, klia2, opened in 2014 and handles the majority of AirAsia's enormous regional network. That split between full-service and budget operations gives KUL an unusually broad traffic profile.
Geographically, the airport sits within reach of over 600 million people across ASEAN, making it one of the most strategically positioned hubs in Asia. It serves as a key connecting point between South Asia, East Asia, and Oceania. The surrounding Klang Valley is Malaysia's economic core, and the airport is linked to the city by the KLIA Ekspres rail service, which covers the distance in roughly 28 minutes. KUL has periodically ranked among the top airports globally for passenger experience. Its capacity has expanded steadily since opening, and ongoing development has kept it competitive against regional rivals in Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong.
