About the data

Flights reconstructed from ADS-B — the position signal modern aircraft broadcast to air traffic. Coverage is strongest across North America and Europe, thinner over oceans, polar regions, and parts of Asia and Africa.

Long-haul flights whose paths cross sparsely-covered areas may appear with an unknown origin or destination — the receiver network loses sight of them mid-ocean. We mark those unknown rather than guess. Every flight is still counted in the totals; the route-by-route breakdown filters to flights with identified endpoints.

These statistics cover San Francisco International Airport (SFO/KSFO) on May 7, 2026, the 99th anniversary of the opening of Mills Field. ADS-B data captured 739 total flights across 433 unique aircraft, split between 391 arrivals and 348 departures, with 97 additional ground operations logged. The day's first tracked flight appeared at 11:16 PDT and the last at 23:59 PDT, producing an average of 30.8 flights per hour across the active window. The busiest single hour was 14:00 PDT, which saw 93 movements, 60 of them departures. A second peak emerged around 20:00 PDT with 82 total movements, this time skewed toward arrivals at 51. The top route by combined traffic was Los Angeles (LAX) with 41 movements, followed by Las Vegas (LAS) at 23 and Seattle (SEA) and Orange County (SNA) tied at 20 each. San Diego (SAN) and Denver (DEN) each recorded 18 and 16 movements respectively. The dominant approach directions were ENE (87 arrivals) and SE (82 arrivals), with ENE also leading departure directions at 86. Aircraft registered to the United States accounted for 379 of the 433 unique aircraft. Canada contributed 10, Japan and one country coded LA each supplied 5, and China and the United Kingdom each added 4. Altitude data spans 634,224 ADS-B position points. The band from 35,000 to 38,000 feet contained the highest concentration of cruise-level observations, with the 37,000 to 38,000 foot range alone accounting for nearly 33,000 points. Maximum recorded altitude was 47,950 feet, reached by tail number N672FX on an arrival from Salt Lake City. The longest flight by distance was an arrival from JFK covering 2,426.4 nautical miles in 400.1 minutes. The shortest was an arrival from nearby San Carlos Airport (SQL), covering just 5.9 nautical miles in under six minutes. Total distance across all tracked legs was 555,533.6 nautical miles, with an average leg distance of 751.7 nautical miles and an average duration of 134 minutes.
